Enter Your Birth Date

How the Calculation Works

How This Calculator Works: Enter your date of birth, and the calculator computes your age by calculating the time elapsed from your birth date to today. The calculator accounts for varying month lengths (28-31 days) and leap years to determine your exact age in years, months, and days.

Why It's More Complex Than Simple Division: Age calculation requires accounting for the varying number of days in each month and leap years. For example, from March 15, 1995 to March 15, 2026 is exactly 31 years. But from March 15, 1995 to September 1, 2026 requires counting complete years (31), then complete months after your most recent birthday (5 months), then remaining days (17 days).

Leap Years and Day Counting: Every 4 years, February has 29 days instead of 28. This affects the total number of days you've been alive. The calculator counts all elapsed calendar days including leap days.

Note on Precision: This calculator accepts only a birth date (no time or timezone information), so it calculates your age to the calendar day. The hours, minutes, and seconds are calculated based on the time difference from midnight on your birth date to the current time on your computer, which depends on what time you calculate your age.

Worked Example

Example: If you were born on March 15, 1995, and today is September 1, 2026:

  • Years: 31 years (31 complete years have passed since March 15, 1995)
  • Months: 5 months (from March to August; you haven't yet reached your birthday on September 15)
  • Days: 17 days (from August 15 to September 1)
  • Total Days Lived: 11,493 days (from March 15, 1995 to September 1, 2026, counting all elapsed calendar days including leap days in 1996, 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020, and 2024)
  • Total Hours: ~275,832 hours (11,493 days × 24 hours, if both times are at midnight)
  • Total Minutes: ~16,549,920 minutes (275,832 hours × 60)

Note: The hours and minutes displayed depend on what time of day you calculate your age. The example above assumes both dates are at midnight. If you calculate at 3:00 PM, the hours and minutes will include the additional time elapsed during the day.

How to Use This Calculator

Understanding Your Age Results: This calculator breaks down your age into multiple units so you can understand your life span in different ways:

  • Years: The most common way we refer to age ("I'm 31 years old"). Your age in years only increases on your birthday.
  • Months and Days: Provides precision between birthdays. Useful for legal documents, medical records, and genealogy.
  • Days: Shows the total number of calendar days you've been alive. This includes all leap days that have occurred since your birth.
  • Hours and Minutes: Demonstrates the cumulative effect of time. Even though you think of yourself as a certain age in years, you can see you've actually been alive for hundreds of thousands of hours.

Why These Results Matter: Different situations require different age measurements. Insurance companies use precise dates. Baby age is often measured in months or days. Legal age verification uses years. This calculator gives you all the information at once.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is my exact age calculated?

The calculator counts complete years since your birth date, then complete months after your most recent birthday, then remaining days. For example, if you've had 31 birthdays and are 5 months and 17 days past your most recent birthday, your age is 31 years, 5 months, 17 days.

Why does my age in days change because of leap years?

Leap years add an extra day (February 29) every 4 years. If you were born before a leap year, you'll have lived through that extra February 29 day. For example, from March 15, 1995 to September 1, 2026 includes leap days in 1996, 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020, and 2024—that's 8 extra days in your count.
