How the Calculation Works

How the Spinner Works: The wheel is divided into equal segments, one for each option you add. When you spin, the wheel rotates smoothly for 4 seconds, then stops at a random position. The option at the top is your winner.

Random Selection: The spinner uses JavaScript's random number generator to determine where the wheel stops. Each spin generates a random rotation amount between 5 and 8 full rotations, plus a random offset (0-360 degrees). This ensures that every segment has an equal probability of being selected.

Visual Animation: The wheel uses HTML5 Canvas for drawing and CSS transforms for rotation. The animation uses ease-out cubic easing to simulate real-world deceleration, making the spin feel natural and satisfying.

Equal Probability: Every segment has exactly the same chance of winning. A 3-option wheel gives each option a 33.3% chance; a 10-option wheel gives each a 10% chance. No segment is favored or disfavored by the wheel's design.

Worked Example

Example 1: Team Member Picker

  • Options: Alice, Bob, Charlie, Diana, Eve (5 people)
  • Spin Result: Wheel rotates 6.5 times, lands on Charlie
  • Probability: Charlie had a 20% chance (1 in 5) of being selected

Example 2: What Should We Eat?

  • Options: Pizza, Tacos, Sushi, Burgers, Pasta (5 choices)
  • Spin Result: Wheel lands on Pizza
  • Usage: Group can't decide on dinner, so let the wheel choose!

Example 3: Yes or No Question

  • Options: Yes, No (2 options)
  • Use Case: 50/50 decision, like flipping a coin but more fun

How to Use This Calculator

How to Use: Type an option in the input field and click the + button (or press Enter) to add it. You can add up to 20 options. Use the Shuffle button to randomize the order. Click Edit to change an option's text. Click Delete to remove it. The Quick Presets let you instantly load common wheels like "Yes/No" or "What should we eat?"

Common Uses: Group decision-making (what restaurant, which movie, whose turn is it), random selection for fairness (picking team members, assigning chores, choosing volunteers), entertainment (picking games, silly challenges, or party decisions), or breaking ties when people can't agree.

Why Use a Wheel Instead of Guessing? It's fair (every option has equal chances), entertaining (the animation is fun to watch), transparent (everyone sees the process), and takes the pressure off (blame the wheel, not the person who made the choice!). Plus, it's more fun than just deciding by committee.

Mobile Friendly: The spinner works great on phones and tablets. The wheel scales to fit your screen, and all controls are touch-friendly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the spinner truly random?

Yes. Each spin generates a random rotation amount, and the outcome is determined by where the wheel stops. Every option has an equal statistical probability of being selected. No option is favored over others.

How many options can I add?

You can add up to 20 options. The wheel will automatically divide into segments and display text for each. For readability, 3-10 options work best.

Can I edit or delete options after adding them?

Yes! Click the edit icon to change an option's text, or the delete icon to remove it. You must keep at least 2 options on the wheel.

What are the preset wheels?

We include 5 quick presets: Yes/No (simple decision), What should we eat? (8 restaurant types), Pick a name (common names), Chore picker (household tasks), and Team member picker (group selection).

Can I shuffle the wheel?

Yes! The Shuffle button randomly reorders your options. This is useful if you want to change the visual layout without modifying the options themselves.

What does "Remove winner" do?

After spinning, you can remove the winner from the wheel. This is useful for successive spins—for example, picking 3 team members means removing each winner after spinning.

Can I use this on mobile?

Absolutely! The spinner is fully responsive and works great on phones and tablets. All controls are touch-friendly and the wheel scales to fit your screen.
